Eat Pray Love — Happily Ever After? |
|
By Mary Pol After her bitter divorce, writer Elizabeth Gilbert traveled the world for a year. In Italy she ate and learned the language; in India she joined an ashram and meditated. In Bali, her final destination, she planned to devote herself to prayer, studying under a wizened medicine man named Ketut. Instead, she fell in love with a Brazilian businessman, achieving inner peace and a happy ending for the memoir she was already under contract to write. That book, Eat, Pray, Love, was released in 2006 and went on to become a publishing phenomenon, selling more than 7 million copies worldwide. (See the 100 best books of all time.) |

Bali's Travel Boom: Eat, Pray, Love Tourism |
|
By Hillary Brenhouse / Ubud
On a still road in Penestanan Village in Bali's central foothills, a dull, blue-stained signboard points toward the house of the medicine man. Ketut Liyer is a ninth generation healer of undecided age — "maybe 90?" he shrugs — who has never been off the Indonesian island. But the dozen or so women who crowd his compound this afternoon, their chatter in competition with the peeping of caged birds suspended from clay-roofed pavilions, have come from all over. One by one they approach the small, weathered Balinese seer with the brilliant, near-toothless smile, and have him interpret their palms, their legs, sometimes even their spines. |

Swiss look to Asia for closer trade ties |
|
Source: Swissinfo, Jul 5, 2010 Economics Minister Doris Leuthard will travel to Indonesia and Singapore this week in a bid to boost bilateral relations with two of Asia’s most dynamic economies. The visits by Leuthard, who also holds the rotating Swiss presidency, are part of the government’s strategy to develop closer ties with the two key countries. Indonesia is “above all a market of 230 million consumers and very attractive growth rates of about six per cent”, says Massimo Baggi who heads the Asia/Oceania desk at the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs. “It is also one of the countries with an important growth potential,” says Peter Flückiger of the Swiss Business Federation, the largest umbrella organisation representing the Swiss economy. He refers to a recent survey among its members adding that Indonesia is a “stable country with low debts”. Bilateral trade between Switzerland and Indonesia – a country which relies primarily on its huge domestic market – is relatively modest at the moment: about SFr370 million ($342 million) worth of exports against SFr170 million of imports in 2009. |

Press Release: BI Leaves BI Rate Unchanged at 6.50% |
In the Board of Governors' Meeting convened on 5 July 2010, Bank Indonesia decided to hold the BI Rate at 6.50%. This decision was taken after a comprehensive evaluation of economic performance and the future outlook of the economy, which is showing steady overall improvement. The Board of Governors believes that the BI Rate at this level is consistent with achievement of the 5%+1% inflation target in 2010 and 2011 and remains conducive to recovery in the domestic economy amid the persistently high level of global riks from the debt crisis in some European nations. |
