Indonesia and the UPU promoted Cultural Diplomacy through stamps

       
       
       
 
       
 

The Indonesian Embassy to Switzerland in cooperation with the Directorate General of Post and Telecommunication Indonesia and the Universal Postal Union (UPU) have launched the Indonesian Philatelic Exhibition 2007 entitled “Imaging Indonesia in Stamps” in the headquarters of the UPU, Bern on 23 October 2007. The aim of this event was not only dedicated to introduce to the beauty of Indonesia as the “Pearl of the Equator”, but also aimed to promote cultural diplomacy to International community through stamps.

 
 

The event was officially opened by the Ambassador of Indonesia, H.E. Mrs Lucia H. Rustam, alongside with and the Director General of the UPU, Mr. Edouard Dayan, and the Director General of Indonesian Posts and Telecommunication, Mr. Basuki Yusuf Iskandar, and attended by at least 200 important guests, which included ambassadors, Countries delegates to the CA Meeting of the UPU, and Philatelists.

 

 

To mark the opening ceremony, there was a performance of Gamelan music by students of International school in Bern. This presentation has attracted attention and appreciation from the audiences since these young performers, coming from various countries, were able to play the instruments harmoniously well.

 

 

The exhibition will be held from 23 October - November 2007. the collection of Indonesian stamps to be exhibited include from Batik and art festivals around the country, to the world renowned Borobudur temple. The items on display also include a collection of joint issue stamps as well as a number of rare items, and many more besides. From this exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to discover more about Indonesia's rich, varied natural and cultural treasures as recorded through stamps. Not less important, this is also part of a message of diplomacy, in that stamps such as these are not only sending letters to the four corners of the world, they are also an effective instrument in promoting friendship, understanding as well as closer ties between members of our far-flung international community.
